Job Description
Spinal Simplicity is looking for a CAD Engineer to design and work with the Engineering Team to generate 3D models, 2D drawings (prints), and other schematics where dimensions, tolerances, notes, and structures that have been determined, using acquired CAD Solidworks knowledge and drawing techniques. This position is located in Overland Park, KS.
You Will:
- Work on research, design, development, and manufacturability of the Company’s core and new medical products, devices and instrumentation.
- Work with the Engineering team to create and edit system drawings and documents per requirements. Includes editing of geometry, dimensions, tests, charts, and specifications on complex component medical devices, products and instrumentation.
- Prepare project documentation and proper paperwork including, but not limited to, print development, bill of material/parts structure, technical drawings, layouts, document control, systems application and design planning, system structure and engineering change orders. Experience with overlays is preferred.
- Utilize Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) as required for engineering drawings.
- Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) as required utilizing Solidworks Simulation.
- Generates original drawings from various sources, including sketches, verbal instruction and scaling of parts for detail, assembly, parts drawings and block diagrams.
- Translate files to and from various software platforms.
- Operates CAD equipment such as digitizers, plotters, CRT’s and associated peripheral equipment.
- Maintain CAD drawing files using Solidworks, along with text files in Excel and MS Office Products for revision control.
- Ability to work within formal design control processes.
- Working knowledge of relevant manufacturing and machining processes; tooling experience is preferred.
- Assist in maintenance of Design History Files, and other required regulatory documentation, in accordance with Company procedure.
- Interface and communicate with the engineering team to anticipate and/or resolve any issues that could inhibit the medical products function or construction. Provide guidance on matters related to product manufacturability.
- Maintain competence in the Company’s current and future product portfolio.
- Work with existing and new vendors, manufacturers, and other third parties to achieve engineering and production goals. Conduct vendor on-site inspections.
- Conduct inspections of incoming products, parts, assemblies, equipment and/or instrumentation. Ensure quality control standards are being met. Work with Engineering Team on equipment inspection, maintenance, and servicing.
- Maintain effective communication with all Company team members, including Senior Management and across multi-disciplinary function groups (compliance, sales & marketing, shipping and inventory, customer service).
- Represent the Company with professionalism and integrity at industry conferences, tradeshows, cadaver labs and surgical procedures, educational symposiums, trainings, and workshops.
- Prioritize and respond to outside inquiries, requests and/or complaints with the appropriate degree of urgency, thoroughness and follow-up.
- Communicate business, product and ethical matters to the appropriate management team members.
- Maintain ongoing compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and quality standards in relation to all work-related duties. Identify and implement "best practices" in all work-related activities.
- Perform other relevant duties, as assigned.
You Must Have:
- An Associates Degree in Engineering (or relevant technical field)
- Position is located in Overland Park, Kansas with required in-office work.
- 3+ years Proficient work in CAD
- Thorough understanding of drafting principles and ability to visualize parts and part assemblies. Proficient experience in CAD software, Solidworks Basic or higher, to generate drawing documentation. Experience with Solidworks Simulation preferred.
- Additional preferred credential includes CAD Certification in Solidworks.
- Excellent Communication skills, verbal and written. Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Preferred experience in the medical product/device or life sciences arena.
- Strong analytical, problem solving, and mathematical skills. Ability to solve required mathematical computations.
- Self-starter with ability to work independently.
- Preferred experience with 3D printing (programs, equipment, materials, etc.).
- Possess requisite knowledge and expertise in the spine and orthopedic products of the Company.
- Ability to travel overnight on occasion to attend tradeshows, investor meetings, industry training, and/or other work-related activities.
- Write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Effective verbal, listening and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Physical Requirements:

- The employee is regularly required to stand, sit, and walk throughout the day, with extended periods of time spent working on a computer.
- The employee must occasionally attend and participate in product evaluation cadaver labs.
- The employee is required to use hands to operate office and manufacturing/sterilization/inspection equipment, as well as to effectively utilize medical devices and instrumentation for engineering research, design and development purposes.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
